A column about organic red wines we ran a few weeks ago produced a huge response from our readers, and many asked us to discuss the other end of the wine-color spectrum: organic whites.
The trend toward organic produce has rapidly increased in popularity with winemakers, and organic options are becoming more readily available. Some winemakers are even taking steps toward becoming self-sustainable, which requires implementing the most environmentally sound practices in every aspect of the winemaking process.
Since organic wines do not have added chemicals and preservatives, they are more susceptible to bottle variation and in most cases should be drunk right away.
2006 Honig Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc, $15.99
The aroma was like an orchard - peaches, grapefruit and grass. The wine had a lovely tongue-coating texture balanced by bright,Soccer Gear, crisp acids and flavors of lemon pith and stone fruits. This winery wrote the book on sustainability - specifically, as a developer of the Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices, which outlines environmentally sound methods including organic growing, solar power and biofuels. Must be good advice - this was our favorite wine.
2006 Domaine A. et P. de Villaine Les Clous Bourgogne Cote Chalonnaise, $39.99
The nose suggested green bananas, flowers, white currants and lemon pith. The wine had a soft, slightly creamy texture with green banana and a touch of salt plus a malty finish. This was a simple, easy-to-drink chardonnay from a winemaker that has been certified organic in France since 1986. It placed second in the tasting.
2007 Santa Julia Organica Torrontes,Lazio jerseys, $9.99
This Argentine wine had an aroma of honeysuckle, sweet strawberries, cracked black pepper, gardenias and orange muscat. In the mouth, it tasted very floral and perfumy. The nose was lovely and quite aromatic, but the floral component dominated the palate, which reminded some tasters of drinking perfume.
2005 Marimar Estate Don Miguel Vineyard Russian River Chardonnay, $34.99
The bouquet reminded us of baked apples - green and yellow - plus pineapple core and wood. On the palate,Lyon jerseys, we tasted pineapple, toasted wood,Colombia soccer jerseys, spicy pepper and zingy acids. The Torres Family Estate has been producing certified organically farmed wine under this label since 2003. We thought this wine would pair well with Asian foods.
2006 Heller Estate Carmel Valley Chenin Blanc, $24.99
The aroma suggested canned pears, orange blossom and a hint of clove. The wine was slightly effervescent in the mouth with peachy flavors. It was a bit disjointed with sweet-tart flavors, this was a sweeter option from a producer certified in organic farming since 1996. Tasted twice.
. Non-vintage Pommery Brut Royal, $42: Dry aromas of fresh fruit, especially lemon and other citrus. Offering nice effervesce in the mouth, this French wine was clean and refreshing with long finish. Great with food or for a wedding toast.
. 2004 Hogue Genesis Washington Cabernet Sauvignon, $15.99: Earthy, intense aromas of blackberries, leather and spice. Full bodied on the palate, with black cherries and spice. A long finish.
. 2004 Villa Antinori Rosso, $23: This Italian wine was a blend of 60 percent sangiovese, 20 percent cabernet sauvignon, 15 percent merlot and 5 percent syrah. This blend showed aromas of both red and dark fruit. These rich, extracted fruit flavors continued in the mouth, in a silky texture.
. 2005 Croft Quinta da Roeda Vintage Port, $47: This single Quinta (single estate) port showed scents of rich plums and cherries and aged wood, along with floral notes. The fruit tasted more jammy in the mouth - pretty and dark.
. 2004 Beringer Bancroft Ranch Howell Mountain Merlot, $75: A lot to pay for a merlot, but this Napa Valley wine exploded from the glass with plum, cherry, cedar and coffee scents. It was rich and complex on the palate, with hints of spice and eucalyptus following the fruit on the finish.
. 2006 Ecco Domani Chianti, $11: Sweet fruit aromas of cherries and red fruit, along with notes of pepper and spice. Soft on the palate, this Italian wine should be served with pasta covered in a red sauce.
